About Malhar

History of Malhar

The city of Malhar is known for its glorious historical legacy. During the period of 1975-1978, the Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology of Sagar University did extensive excavation at Malhar which revealed a large sculpture wealth at this region. Based on the discovered sculptural specimens during the excavations, it was found that the town had seen five cultural periods, which are Pre-Historic (c. 1000 B.C. to c. 350 B.C.); Maurya, Sunga, Satavahan (c. 350 B.C. to 300 A.D.); Sarabhapuriyas and Somvansis (c. 300 to 650 A.D.); Later Somvansis (c. 650 to 900 A.D.); and Kalachuries (c. 900 to 1300 A.D.). Several forts, coins and excavations have revealed that the Maurya dynasty once had an influential rule at Malhar. After the end of Mauryas, the region came under the Satavahana dynasty, which was followed by the Vakatakas and the Guptas. Once the fall of these dynasties, Malhar came under the administration by the local dynasties such as Sarabhapuriyas, Panduvanshis and the Somvansis. Later, the Somvansis were succeeded by the Kalachuries who ruled around seven hundred years from Ratanpur up to the arrival of the Marathas in the region of Malhar. The coins, which were found during the excavations, have a unique feature that all these are comprised of a Malhar Symbol.

The city of Malhar is situated at the latitude of 21° N and the longitude of 82° E. It lies on the historical route which was linked to Koshambi and Puri on the south-eastern coast of India. In fact, the region of Malhar always enjoys the benefit of its strategic location as it is surrounded by three rivers i.e. Arpa in the west, Lilagar in the east and Sivanath in the south. Malhar experiences tropical climate with summers are too hot and winters remain comparatively cold. During the summers, the temperature can goes up to 45°C especially in the month of May. Transportation in Malhar

The historical town of Malhar is located at a distance of 27 km from Bilaspur via Bilaspur - Raipur road. There are frequent services of government and private buses on this road which take you to this town.
